Computer Help

New to the iMac? Not sure how to update to Mac OS X

I just inherited an apple iMac from a friend of mine and I don't know anything about macs. It's a fairly old one though and it only has mac os 9.2 is there any way I can update it to mac os x because the mac os 9.2 has a strong resemblance of windows 98 ohmy.gif ? Any other help would be greatly appreciated. The computer looks like this one except with older software:

Buy the OS x...
They come on a CD from which you can install.
