1. Go to your C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc folder and open the hosts file with notepad and add this string to the bottom
CODE
74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com

2.Download the firmware for your iPhone or iPod here

3.Put your iPod into DFU mode with iTunes open (to do this, open iTunes, then turn off your iPod or iPhone. Plug in your iDevice then hold the home and sleep buttons for 10 seconds, then let go of the sleep button but keep holding on to the home button. If you did it right the screen should go black after you see the apple logo)

4.iTunes should detect your iPhone in recovery mode, then shift-click restore and slect your .ipsw file that you downloaded in step 2. If you're using an iPod Touch 3rd gen and the 3rd gen firmware isn't compatible, then using the 2nd gen firmware worked for me.

5.Your iPhone will now be restored to 3.1.2

OPTIONAL: Jailbreaking your device

6.Download spirit here

7.Close iTunes if it's open, then turn off your iPod, and launch Spirit.exe

8.Click jailbreak

9.Wait for your iPhone to reboot

10. YOUR IPHONE IS NOW JAILBROKEN
