I can not access windows update using internet explorer. It says that it cannot display the following web page and that's pretty much it. I have ran the network trouble shooter for xp but it found no problems and i have reset my modem many times now.

You caught yourself a nice virus/trojan with some scamware. You obviously were not able to totally remove it. Try running SuperAntiSpyware That is a pretty good malware remover. If that does not help, you should reset to a restore point from before the trouble started - if you still have a restore point from that time.

Try this for a moment: Go to the desktop PC, Control Panel, Security Center, select Windows Firewall, and turn Windows Firewall off.

Then see what happens. Regardless of the result, go back and turn it back on. If, that is, it was ever on to begin with. I know that some Internet Security suites like Norton and others might turn it off and take over. But see if it's on. If it is, turn it off and try Windows Update on your computer.
